Funny fact about me: I never ate a single avocado until I was in my mid-30s. It’s funny because up until then, I touted all the benefits of avocados in beauty recipes! It wasn’t uncommon for me to buy the fruit to smash up and put on my face and in my hair, or to keep a huge bottle of the oil for everything from DIY massage oils to sugar scrubs. Yet, despite knowing all the benefits of avocados, I was afraid to taste them. I’m an insanely picky eater and it takes me a long time to work up the courage to try new things.
Then one summer day, my mom whipped up her fast and easy guacamole recipe for a Jack and Jill wedding shower for my brother and sister-in-law-to-be. My brother is probably one of the few people in the world that can get me to try new foods, mostly because he has an uncanny ability to predict what I’ll like. Because of him, I now like feta cheese on watermelon, and aged pecorino cheese dipped in honey. Things that I never would have thought I’d like! So when he said “try the guac,” I actually did. Within two bites, it became one of my absolute favorite snacks! Thank goodness it’s so easy to make.
The Best and Easiest 2-Ingredient Guacamole Salsa Ever
This is more of a guac salsa than a traditional, straight-up guac, but it’s my favorite avocado recipe ever. It only has two ingredients, but you can add other stuff if you want to “zest” it up a bit (like lime juice or spicy seasonings). For each batch, we use:
- 2 Ripe Hass avocados
- 1 16-oz container of fresh salsa (found in my grocer’s veggie section, not too far from the avocados).
To make it, slice the avocado in half, take out the pit, then scoop out the “meat” and mash it a bit with a fork, then stir it into the salsa, a bit at a time. Mix it up with a fork until it’s the consistency that you want. We don’t always us the whole container of salsa, it depends on the size of our avocados.
See, crazy easy, right? The key is to use only ripe Hass avocados and fresh salsa. It HAS to be fresh! Eat it with lime tortilla chips like I do, or your favorite plain or black bean tortilla chips. Pretty much anything goes when it comes to dipping.
How to add more avocado to your diet
Now that I know I like avocados, I actively seek more ways to add them into my diet. Avocado contributes nearly 20 vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, making it a good choice to help meet nutrient needs. Avocadosalso act as a “nutrient booster” by helping the body to better absorb fat-soluble nutrients, such as alpha- and beta-carotene and lutein, from foods that are eaten with the fruit. As a picky eater, it can be hard for me to get all my required nutrients, so when I find something that packs such a powerful punch that I actually like, you bet I’m going to try to work it into as many foods as possible!
Here are a few delicious and easy ways to work them into your diet!
- Slice them up and add them to your favorite salad recipe! Or even better, make them the star of the salad, the way Turning the Clock back did with her Shrimp Avocado Salad recipe.
- Use them as healthier fat substitutes in recipes! Frugal Farm Wife has a whole list of swaps that you can make with avocados.Avocados contain naturally good monounsaturated fat and are cholesterol free. Naturally good fats are an important part of a healthy diet.
- Make ice-cream! You know the banana ice-cream that’s all the rage (or it’s all the rage to me, since I eat it pretty much every night)? Take it to whole new levels by mixing in a bit of avocado! Or make it portable with this cool (pun intended) Frozen Avocado Banana Paleta Recipe!
- Toss them in a smoothie! Add half of an avocado to just about any smoothie to give it an extra kick. You can even use it in place of the dairy products in your smoothie recipes.
- Slice ’em and top ’em!Try this for a super simple snack: Slice in half and remove the pit. Then add cottage cheese and honey to the indentation where the bit was. Top with some sesame seeds for added crunch. Oooh! Or you could put cottage cheese, feta and honey together! Yum!
Of course, you could just mash up some avocado and eat it on whole grain toast if you’re not in the mood to get fancy. I have a perpetually queasy stomach in the morning (think morning sickness that never, ever ends). The combo of avocado and toast actually helps settle it a bit.
So versatile, fresh avocados can be used in any meal or dish. They can be used as a recipe substitute for bad fats, a way to add naturally good fats, a nutrient-dense fruit to add nutrient value, and as a vegan or vegetarian possible alternative to dairy products.

I LOVE avocados and try to put them in as many things as I can! This guac sounds delightful! If I’m going super simple I usually just mash half an avo with salt, pepper, a little bit of EVOO and a dash of fresh lemon juice which is so good! But I do like the idea of throwing some salsa in the mix! Must try

I have no trouble adding avocados to my diet because I like them so much! I keep them on hand all the time to make guacamole or to add to a salad. I also buy ready made guacamole to keep in the refrigerator for when my avocados are not ripe enough to create homemade guac!
