Art Sub Lesson - Ice Cream Truck Elementary K 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th Editable Text (2024)

If you are looking for an elementary drawing lesson that incorporates art history and can be taught by subs, teachers, or parents, this just might be the lesson you are looking for. If you need an emergency art sub plan to keep in your sub folder or sub tub, this might be it. Need something for your leave of absence or maternity leave? This lesson plan will definitely help you out.

I created this open ended, fun drawing activity with the goal of keeping students engaged. If kids are not fully engaged when they have a sub, that is a recipe for chaos and misbehavior. So, I tried creating a lesson they could relate to and have fun with.

What is this lesson about?
Starting with the work of three contemporary artists, who use the image of ice cream trucks in their art, students are lead through discussions of how different people can use one idea, the ice cream truck, to come up with such different ideas for how to create one.

Students look at photos of many ice cream trucks and carts, some traditional and some that are far from it, and then come up an imaginary drawing of one, all their own. There is also a slide about craftsmanly coloring and another slide containing a rubric for that.

Appropriate Grades for This Lesson
This lesson is suitable for all elementary grades.

Ways to Teach This Lesson
✨ projected as a PowerPoint

✨printed out and read like a book

✨printed out and shown under a document camera

✨taught as a distance learning video

How to Present the Lesson
This PowerPoint lesson plan can be printed out and handed to a substitute teacher. All the sub has to do is read the slides and follow the directions. If you have a tech savvy sub, they can project it in the classroom.

You can also use this for distance learning. Works great in Google Meet, Zoom, or something similar.

Supplies Needed by Students
The drawing part of the lesson uses the most basic supplies: pencils (if you wish); crayons or markers; and paper.

Time
This 29 page lesson was meant to be presented and completed in one 55 minute class. Younger children will likely complete the drawing more quickly than older ones. This lesson could easily be extended to 2 classes with older students.

When to Use
This activity is perfect to leave for short or long term absences and for maternity leave. While written with a sub in mind, regular teachers often find my lessons perfect for those days when they need a lesson at the last minute, or need an engaging lesson that is easy to teach.

Who Can Teach This?
Written for a sub, it may also be taught by classroom techers, art teachers, and homeschool teachers. It is no prep and fully scripted so that all someone has to do is follow along with prompts given in the presentation.
Differentiation
Included in this PowerPoint are 2 slides with outlines of an ice cream truck. Students who may be unable to create an entire drawing on their own, may find it helpful to use the structure of an outline. It may also be helpful for those students who need help getting started.

Included are:

☀️3 pages of instructions on how to teach the lesson

☀️3 works of art featuring ice cream trucks created by contemporary artists

☀️11 photos of actual ice cream trucks

☀️4 student examples of ice cream truck drawings

☀️1 sheet on "How to Color Neatly"

☀️1 rubric on coloring neatly

☀️2 templates of ice cream trucks to use either for students who need help (differentiation) or to pass out to all students, if you wish

What people are saying about this lesson:

”I LOVE how you incorporate different artists in these! I am going to be taking off next week and this literally saved me so much time and worry for sub plans! Everytime I use one of these sub plans my subs say how organized/easy it is! Thank you for making my life easier!”
