ingredients

1 pound fresh mushrooms
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 envelope Ranch salad dressing mix

directions

Clean the mushrooms but leave them whole. Place them in the crock pot.

Combine the melted butter and Ranch salad dressing mix. Drizzle it over the mushrooms.

Cover the crock pot and cook on low for 3 to 4 hours, stirring once after the first hour to coat the mushrooms in the butter mixture.

Serve the ranch mushrooms hot.

crock pot notes

Crock pots/slow cookers all heat differently. There is no standard among manufacturers. Cooking times are suggested guidelines based on our testing. Please adjust cooking times and temps to work with your brand and model of slow cooker.

recipe tips

For a healthier version, use a low-fat or light butter substitute.

Add a sprinkle of fresh herbs like parsley or chives.

If you prefer a stronger Ranch flavor, add an extra half envelope of the dressing mix.

If you have leftovers, use them as a filling for omelets or as a topping for baked potatoes.

For a bit of heat, add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes to the butter and Ranch mixture.

Experiment with different mushroom varieties for a mix of textures and flavors.

If the sauce seems too thick, a splash of chicken or vegetable broth or even white wine can be added.

Serve with crusty bread to soak up the delicious buttery sauce.

common recipe questions

What type of mushrooms work best for this recipe?

Any fresh mushrooms can be used, but white button or cremini mushrooms are good choices due to their size and flavor.

Can I use dried mushrooms instead of fresh?

It's best to use fresh mushrooms for this recipe as they have the right texture and moisture content. Rehydrated mushrooms work better in dishes where they aren't the main ingredient.

What is Ranch salad dressing mix and where can I find it?

Ranch salad dressing mix is a blend of herbs and spices used to make Ranch dressing. It's available in envelopes in the salad dressing aisle of most grocery stores.

Can I make my own Ranch dressing mix for this recipe?

Yes, you can make a homemade mix instead of buying it.

How do I know when the mushrooms are done cooking?

The mushrooms are done when they are tender and have absorbed the flavors of the butter and Ranch mix, typically in 3 to 4 hours on low heat in the crock pot.

Can I cook the mushrooms on high heat to reduce the cooking time?

It's not recommended as high heat can cause the mushrooms to become too soft or mushy. Low and slow cooking is ideal for this recipe. If you need to cook them faster, try cooking them for 30 minutes on high and then on low for 2 hours.

How should I serve the ranch mushrooms?

Serve them hot as a side dish, appetizer, or as a topping for steaks, burgers, or chicken.

What's the best way to store and reheat leftovers?

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheat gently in a microwave or on the stovetop.

Can I freeze the cooked ranch mushrooms?

Freezing is not recommended. Mushrooms become spongy after freezing.

I didn't expect these to be quite as good as they were. I highly recommend doubling or tripling the recipe if you have a full size crock pot. We couldn't stop eating them!

I use two pounds mushrooms, 1/4 C butter, and dry Italian dressing mix, instead of Ranch, reserving several teaspoons to mix with drained mushrooms before serving. Cook in crock pot on High for four hour. Totally delish and great with steak.

Love this recipe. I serve over steaks! So delicious. I will also add an onion and then roast spaghetti squash and serve this over the top of the squash and add a little parm cheese as a meatless main dish. Family loves it

I think this would be great with a touch of Worcestershire in it.

Excellent as written but the way I now fix them most of the time is to use 1-1/2 pounds of sliced mushrooms with the same amount of butter and Ranch mix. Cook on low for 2-1/2 hours. They're always a huge hit to top steaks and hamburgers. Since most of the liquid gets drained off to eat, I think the butter flavors nicely without ingesting the extra calories.

My husband and I thought they were just ok. Something that has that much butter in it needs to be darn good (which it wasn't) to be worth the calories.

I made this for my family to serve with Christmas dinner. To say they loved them is an understatement. I made 2.5 pounds and they were gone, could have made twice as many. No one believed there are only 3 ingredients!

I am making it again for a party tonight even though I know some of the same people will be there from New Years, but I guarantee there will be no complaints! LOVED it...Thanks for sharing!

Omg I love mushrooms and this is no exceptions... delish!

  23. vadeltachi December 19, 2013

As to butter, I don't think you need a full 1/2 cup -- use less or perhaps some EVOO to replace some of the butter. The mushrooms should have a lot of moisture in them, especially if you wash them with water first. The butter does add a richness and flavor that is delicious.

    ADDICTIVE!

  25. MM REVIEW:

Regardless of what you think about using mixes like ranch dressing mix, you really should try this recipe at least once. I guarantee that you'll make an exception! I needed a last minute recipe and had all the ingredients on hand. I have to say I'm now a HUGE fan of what an unexpected ingredient can do. Good luck not eating them all yourself. Double, no, triple, the recipe because the mushrooms will be gone instantly. Good enough for guests and even picky eaters will eat it.

  26. tmiller REVIEW:

These are so good! I was unsure about the ranch dressing mix but it makes them so good. Although I'd say that one pound wouldn't serve 6, it's more like 4 at the most. And you'll want to quadruple the recipe just because you won't be able to stop eating them. AMAZING!

Made these for an extended family potluck. They were a smash hit! I used 3 lbs mushrooms, 1 cup butter and 2 pkgs ranch. There was plenty of flavor without tripling the sauce.

  30. Sam REVIEW:
    April 1, 2013

Smash hit on Easter Sunday!! Doubled the recipe with no problems. Two pounds of mushrooms was just to the top of my 2.5qt slow cooker. I also sautéed some mushrooms and they did not go over like the slow cooker mushrooms did!

do you use the o.4 oz. salad dressing one or the 1.0 oz. dips one? thank you
