This is a milkshake that is too thick and too full of chunks to drink from a straw. That's right, you are gonna need a spoon and an appetite for this one.

If you are a fan of blizzards or flurries, sundaes or even ice cream in general, then this chunky chocolatey cherry milkshake is a perfect option for a sweet treat on a hot night.

Why you will love this cherry milkshake:

  • So simple to make. Milkshakes really are the very best. You just need a few ingredients and a blender. Nothing much to it.
  • Uses a handful of ingredients. This cherry milkshake uses classic milkshake ingredients plus some extras to really give it a wow factor.
  • Cold and delicious. When it's hot outside, there is nothing like a cool treat to share.
  • Lots of cherry and chocolate chunks. Chunky for sure, but you can still sip this with a straw if you want. Just make sure to blend enough that they break down small. Or you can go big and dig in.

Ingredients:

  • vanilla ice cream: I prefer vanilla with fresh or frozen cherries versus starting with cherry ice cream in this cherry milkshake recipe. The flavor of the classic vanilla is the best place to start with a milkshake in my opinion. Find the best vanilla ice cream here!
  • cherries: fresh or frozen, just make sure they are pitted. While you could use maraschino cherries, I find them too sweet for this recipe and opted for slightly thawed frozen dark cherries. Soak them in bourbon or rum for an adult versoion of this milkshake!
  • milk: for the creamiest milkshake, aim for whole milk. 2% will work if that is what you have.
  • vanilla: just a touch is all you need.
  • chocolate bar or chips: your favorite chocolate bar or chocolate. You can use dark or milk chocolate. Hershey's classic or another you love.

How to make the best cherry milkshake:

The key is to start with slightly softened ice cream. If your ice cream is too hard, you may end up adding too much milk and then the shake will be too thin in the end.

Add the milk in first and then the vanilla and cherries. Scoop the softened ice cream on top. Blend until smooth. Add a touch more milk if necessary.

Add in the chopped chocolate and pulse for about 5 seconds at a time or until broken down as desired.

Pour into glasses and top with more chocolate and whipped cream.

Expert Tips and Notes:

  • 1 scoop of ice cream is roughly a half cup. For this recipe, you will need 3 cups of vanilla ice cream.
  • If you want your chocolate cherry milkshake super smooth, add chocolate sauce instead of the chunks. You can add about 3 tablespoons.
  • Other add ins you may like: mini M&M's chocolate sprinkles, crushed oreos, or even another fruit.
