Warming Winter Pies You'll Want To Make - Mother Distracted (2024)

Whilst the weather is dark and dismal there’s nothing like hearty, warming winter pies to make you feel all cosy and ‘Hygge’, are there? Here is a collection of 10 just such warming winter pies that are easy to make from the kitchens of some of my favourite bloggers.

Warming Winter Pies You'll Want To Make - Mother Distracted (1)

I say warming winter pies but of course you could enjoy these at any time, and those using seasonal fruit are better cooked and devoured as soon as possible.

Pies are next on my agenda because, having finally got to grips with the slow cooker, Ieuan remarked at tea that we seem to be having “an awful lot of casseroles”.

There’s a mix of sweet and savoury here which should suit all tastes, whether you’re a custard or a gravy fiend.

Leyla at Motherhooddiaries.com created her pie after some serious blackberry foraging with her three boys. We weren’t so lucky here with our blackberry crop but I suspect you have to be pretty quick off the mark if you want to make a tasty pie like this one.

Jane’s Honey Spiced Pumpkin Pie

This is an easy to make sweet pie that you can make using a ready-made sweet pastry case to save some time. It’s filled with a delicious mix of pumpkin puree, honey and spices and is best eaten slathered in cream.

Jane also shared her first ever blog post which was, coincidentally a recipe for a vegetarian Skinny Homity Pie.

A Homity pie is a traditional British open vegetable pie although little is known about its origins.

Jane’s skinny version containsonion, potato, eggs and cheese and she uses shop bought filo pastry to save time in the kitchen. Grated cheddar cheese and mustard add an extra tang.

Bacon, mushrooms, black pudding and rabbit makes this pie full of flavour, says Claire. Rabbit may be an acquired taste for some but it is readily available and this pie can be whipped up in no time. Claire used her slow cooker to cook the rabbit meaning the rest of the pie could be put together in 20 minutes before baking.

Jen’s Gardeners Pie is a brilliant way of using up a glut of vegetables or, in my case, the usually large pile lurking in the ‘vegetable drawer’. This one used potatoes, onion, celery, carrots, parsnips, spinach and peas. I’m not quite sure Ieuan is ready for this one but I know the rest of us are!

Nicola says that you can use a huge range of fillings for these puff pastry pies, but for this particular recipe, she went with a creamy cheese sauce with chicken and two of baby Dex’s favourite vegetables – leeks and spinach. Dex is 20 months old and could teach Ieuan a thing or two about eating his veg!
