Weather Activities for Kids Yoga (+ Printable Poster) (2024)

Where’s the snow? This time last year, we were covered in six feet of snow!

This winter, Mother Nature brought us a plethora of weather, including heavy rain, light snow, hailstorms, blustery winds, bright sunshine, and dramatic thunderstorms. So we didn’t get out the winter books for kids this year. Instead, we filled my daughter’s book display with weather books.

And of course, you know what I’m going to say – why not act out various types of weather through yoga poses for kids! Learning through movement is our magical recipe for active educational experiences.

12 Weather Books for Kids

First, take out your weather books. We found more than forty children’s books about weather at the library, and below are our favorite:

WEATHER
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, by Judi Barrett and Ron Barrett
This book was my daughter’s favorite weather book, and I used to read it in my primary classrooms. The weather in the town of Chewandswallow brings weather three times a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) to serve up food for its residents. Kids find it hilarious!

SNOW
Blizzard, by John Rocco
This is a true story of the blizzard of 1978 in New England, where families were stuck at home for days. We enjoyed this book because we had our first blizzard experience last year, and we used the book to remember it.

SNOW, by Sam Usher
I loved this book. The story builds anticipation as a young boy is waiting patiently for his grandfather to get ready so they can be the first to play in the freshly fallen snow. A great book to talk to children about patience!

LadyBug Girl and the Big Snow, by David Soman and Jacky Davis
We are big fans of the LadyBug Girl series, and this one is no exception. This story is about looking on the bright side of life.

Where Do Fairies Go When It Snows?, by Liza Gardner Walsh and Hazel Mitchell
My daughter and I discovered this book at Christmastime at a local museum where trees were decorated using ideas from a book. My daughter loves fairies, so this cute rhyming book is a hit.

RAIN
Toad Weather, by Sandra Markle and Thomas Gonzalez
This book’s illustrations are stunning. They are like real pictures of a girl, her mom, and grandmother. The mom takes them on an adventure through the rainy streets of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to see the toad migration.

I Love the Rain, by Margaret Park Bridges and Christine Davenier
In this simple story, a girl shows her friend how to love the rain. This is a perfect book for preschoolers who may need a little convincing of the beauty of rain.

The Umbrella, by Jan Brett
We love all of Jan Brett’s books. This story follows a boy who puts down his umbrella while in search of rainforest animals on a rainy day in the cloud forest. Meanwhile, a group of animals all huddle together in the abandoned umbrella.

WIND
Hairy Maclary’s Hat Tricks, by Lynley Dodd
My daughter enjoys all the silly rhyming Hairy Maclary books. This one follows Hairy Maclary, the dog, as he tries to play with a Frisbee in the wind and ends up catching a ladies hat instead.

The Wind Blew, by Pat Hutchins
This charming book shows how a group of townspeople lose their things in the blustery wind. My daughter screeched with laughter throughout the whole book.

SUN
Sun Bread, by Elisa Kleven
The bright, engaging illustrations in this book are wonderful. The story is set in an animal village, where the dog baker likes to bake sun bread to feed the sun. It’s a very sweet story.

You are My Sunshine, by Steve Metzger and Jill Dubin
I’ve been singing this song to my daughter since she was born. She still asks for this book, and it’s a great way to cuddle up to read together.

Once you have your weather books out, brainstorm various types of weather words (or age-appropriate vocabulary), like:

clouds, barometer, dew, rain, sunshine, lightning, hurricane, blizzard, breeze, flooding, foggy,
wind, muggy, meteorologist, precipitation, rainbow, air pressure, and tornado.

My daughter and I made a rain stick and a wind stock. Next, we’re going to make a barometer.
