Green onion dip is a classic appetizer for any event, whether that be an elaborate sports party or a quiet movie marathon at home.

It’s a creamy dip with a delicious combination of vegetables and spices that pairs well with simple chips or fancy toasted bread.

In short, it’s a one-size-fits-all type of dip that has a tried and true crowd-pleasing flavor profile.

Can you make this dip in advance?

One of the most common questions I get about partydips is whether or not you can make them in advance. I totally understand why someone would want to do this, as it’s easier to prepare treats for a party the night before than scrambling to get everything done the day of the event.

The good news is that the answer to this question is almost alwaysyes, and that is the case for this dip.

You should be able to make this dipup to 24 hours in advance.

What can you serve with a savory party dip?

When it comes to party dips, there are so many options for dipping! Feel free to use any (or many!) from the list below:

  • Chips! Any type of mild or original flavored chips.
  • Ritz crackers
  • Pretzels
  • Wheat Thins
  • Mild veggies like cucumbers, squash, zucchini, or celery

How long can you leave out a party dip?

Whenever you serve a dip for your guests to enjoy, you should always keep track of how long it sits at room temperature.

For most foods, the general rule of thumb is that a perishable item should not be in the “danger zone” for more than two hours. And by “danger zone,” this is usually at or just above room temperature. I recommend preparing this dip with chilled ingredients or serving it chilled, as this should give you more time (about one hour) before the dip reaches room temperature.

So, in total, this dip can be left out for “about” three hours, depending on the start temperature and the temperature of the room. However, be sure to still check the dip every now and then – dairy products can be tricky like that.

Once you’re near the recommended time, you can cover the dip and place it back in the refrigerator. If your guests still want more dip, let it chill for at least 30 minutes before bringing it back out again.

When ready to eat, allow dip to soften at room temperature for 30 minutes before serving.

Yes, you totally can!

Once prepared, green onion dip can be stored in a sealed container or freezer back for up to three months.

Notes & tips for green onion dip

  • You can substitute the sour cream in this recipe for an equal portion of plain yogurt.
  • You could also substitute the sour cream for mayonnaise, but you may want to omit the lemon juice. If making this substitutioin, mix the dip first without the lemon juice and do a taste test.

How to make green onion dip

Step 1 – In a small skillet, heat the olive oil and cook the green onion and garlic until lightly charred (or to a doneness of your liking).

Step 2 – Transfer the cooked green onion and garlic to a food processor, then add the following ingredients: cream cheese, sour cream, lemon juice, cayenne pepper, sea salt, and black pepper.

  • 5 green onions, chopped, plus more for garnish (optional)

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons fresh minced garlic

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened

  • 1 cup sour cream

  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt, or to taste

  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, or to taste

  • mild chips or veggies, for dipping

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a small skillet over medium-high heat. Add green onion and garlic to skillet, then cook 2-3 minutes per side or until lightly charred.
